TREES & MEMORIES

Over the past two years, Kate has been developing a powerful collection of artwork under the Trees & Memories project—an entirely Cornish initiative that has resonated widely across the region.

The idea began when Kate Cambridge, resident artist at Tregrehan Gardens in Cornwall,  painted a beloved tree on the Tregrehan Estate. That piece became the “Tregrehan” artwork, later auctioned at the Great Art Auction in aid of the Cornwall Community Foundation, as part of a fundraising initiative by the Great Gardens of Cornwall.

Inspired by the response from people of Cornwall to that first painting, Kate expanded the project to include more trees—each chosen for its unique story. Painted in her distinctive modern classic style, the collection now features over twenty iconic trees, each one tied to a personal memory.

KATE CAMBRIDGE

Visual Artist

I paint Guardian Trees and all manner of interesting trees especially here in Cornwall. I also paint cabin scenes. My aim is to capture atmosphere, character and natural beauty.

WHO I AM

Pleased to meet you, my name is Kate Cambridge, but most people tend to call me “that artist that paints trees in Cornwall”. I do live in Cornwall, it’s beautiful and I consider myself very lucky.
It’s full of ancient trees, stories and of course changeable weather… so I’m in my element. Every tree has a story and memory attached to it, I love hearing them. So I paint what I love and what other people love.

WHAT I DO

Trees & Memories of Cornwall

I paint the Great Trees I find in Cornwall. Their natural beauty speaks for istelf. The stories and history attached to them is magical. They always surprise me! The beauty and memories attached acts like an insurance policy! People protect what they love.

I’d encourage anyone with stories of their connection to any tree worldwide to get in touch please.

WHAT I DO

GUARDIAN TREES AND CABINS

My work is also influenced by my love of Scandinavian landscapes, history and mythology. When travelling, I was really moved by the old ways and ancient Scandinavian traditions. Homesteads give thanks to their own guardian trees on their land for protection and good wealth. What a lovely tradition.

WHERE & HOW

I paint mainly outdoors with the weather, acrylics and spray-paint. I paint in ANY weather. If you see someone painting with the rain bouncing off their head, it’s probably me. Painting outdoors helps to involve nature practically in each piece. The rawness, strength, connection and emotion is in each piece, which is really what I want people to feel when they see it.

After a client commissoned me to create his favourite scene, I asked permission to enter it into the Royal Cornwall Museum, spirit of Cornwall exhibition. It was accepted and when it’s over my client is very happy for it to find it’s place in his home. Thanks so much to everyone involved.
